Pros and Cons of Getting a Havanese from a Rescue Shelter

Pros:

A rescue shelter will be a far more economical way to get a Havanese dog.  Buying one through a breeder can be very expensive.  Due to the rare nature of the dogs, breeders are currently charging between two-thousand and twenty-five hundred dollars for a Havanese puppy.  Adoption fees are minimal by comparison.

You will be helping.  Though Havanese are very desirable and popular, and will not stay around a shelter for long without being taken home by someone.  Still yet, you are doing your part to help an animal that may have led a hard life.  While most shelter animals were given up for adoption by their owners, some have been taken away from negligent owners and are in real need of a good home.  You can take home a pet that may need you even more than you need them.

You will not have to deal with breeders who can be unethical.  As these dogs increase in popularity, many people are seeing them as a get-rich-quick scheme.  While most breeders are good people, there are those out there who are just trying to make a buck, with no consideration for the health or happiness of the animals.  By going through a reputable rescue shelter, you avoid having to deal with people like this.

Cons:

While rescue shelters are wonderful organizations with only the best in mind for the dogs and prospective owners, they may not be able to give the same services as for-profit breeders.  Whereas a good breeder can offer you a selection of puppies, rescue shelters may only be able to offer Havanese as they get them.  This may mean that you have less of a choice in age, color and other characteristics of your pet.

In addition, a rescue shelter may not have all the information about the dogs they get.  Breeders, on the other hand, can offer you registration papers and full documentation on the dog you are getting as well as the lineage that it was bred from.  This type of information is important for any dog, but will be especially important if you choose to breed your Havanese dog.  Also, a better knowledge of your dog’s medical history will allow you to take better care of him as he ages. Another aspect to consider are the types of Havanese you can look out for.
