The Havanese has a playful, friendly temperament unlike other toy dog breeds. It is at home with young kids and other pets and is rarely shy or anxious around new people. Clever and active, they will solicit attention by executing tricks. The breed does not need a lot of exercise.

The Havanese is a very people-oriented dog, frequently following their humans around the house. They are not overly possessive of their people and do not suffer aggression or jealousy towards other dogs, pets, or humans.

Their love of kids stems from their times as the playmate of small children. unlike most toy dogs, who are too delicate, anxious or aggressive to tolerate the frequently clumsy play of children, the Havanese, with care, is a cheerful companion to even younger children, and this is no small part of its growing popularity around the world. They are productive and do need exercise, though not as much as a big or even medium size pet.

If never primped, clipped or altered in any way, the Havanese offers a rugged impression in a little dog.Tail is carried up more than the back when gaiting. The breed is of solid physical type and sound constitution. The Havanese offers a rugged impression of a little dog, it is sturdy, and while a small breed, it is neither fragile nor overdone.Chocolates also have green or amber eyes. In some European countries the dark and chocolate dogs, have been not always recognized. but the dark canines happen to be recognized for several years, and the Chocolate canines are now lately recognized. The gait is unique, lively & 'springy" which accentuates the happy character of the Havanese. In North America, all colors are recognized, no preference is given to one color more than another. dark and chocolate are chosen colors using a number of North American breeders. A chocolate Havanese must retain at least a 1 inch (2.6 cm.) patch of chocolate hair. Some Havanese maintain a short haired recessive gene. If two Adults with this recessive gene have a litter of puppies, it is feasible that some of the puppies will be born with smooth coats. A Havanese using a short coat cannot be shown and is a serious fault using the show arena. Some have nicknamed the Havanese born with short coats Shavanese. eye rims, the nose and lips are solid dark on all colors except the true chocolate dog. The Havanese arrives in any color, including cream, gold, white, silver, blue, and black. Also parti and tricolors. The legs are powerful and allow for free and uncomplicated movement. The dim eye and long tail are covered with long silky hair. The profuse coat varies from wavy to curly. The Havanese is a double-coated breed with soft hair, the two on outer and undercoat. grownup coat reaches 6 to 8 inches, and has a pearly sheen.

The Havenese was developed in Cuba and was very famous using the wealthy people of the country before the Cuban Revolution. after the revolution, the breed almost started to be extinct. However, an American breeder intervened and began working to save the breed from that fate. Today, the breed is becoming increasingly famous using the U. S. and other countries.

We have been feeding our three year old Labradoodle IAMS dogs food for three years. We did not even think his food was the problem when he started having seizures (2x month) and vomiting (daily) this past summer. It was very scary After searching on line for a cure (two vets could not find a solution or cause), I found someone online who had the same problem with their dog... the common link was IAMS dog food. Our particular dog food was NOT on the recall list. We changed it anyway to a natural dog food. Result: no seizures and no vomiting for TWO full months. By the way, this same dog food did not seem to effect our 1 1/2 year old schnoodle.

I HAVE 2 HAVANESE DOGS. I LOVE THEM BOTH. THEY GET A PUPPY CUT MONTHLY. NAILS TRIMMED. EARS CLEANED. IT'S EXPENSIVE AND I STILL COMB THEM DAILY AND WASH THEM WEEKLY WITH TEA TREE SHAMPOO FROM ESPREE. IT'S WORK EITHER WAY... LONG OR SHORT. WATCH THE GROOMERS ... A GOOD ONE IS HARD TO FIND. THEY TEND TO JUST WANT TO CLIPPER CUT DOWN TO THE SKIN. THAT HAS HAPPENED TO ME TWICE NOW .... NO MATTER HOW MUCH YOU TELL THEM LONG. FULL FACE, FULL LEGS AND SHORT ON THE BACK .... I DON'T KNOW WHY THEY WON'T DO THAT CUT. MAYBE IT'S TIME AND MONEY. HUGS AND KISSES TO YOUR HAVANESE AND BEST OF LUCK. SUSAN
