Do you wish to have a male or female Havanese? Are there any differences between the sexes? The male and female Havanese have very similar behavioral traits. The Havanese breed has similar affection and intellectual levels in both males and females. Choose a male or female based on your connection with them. You have the flexibility to choose between sexes unlike other breeds of dogs where males and females can act very differently. Age Of The Havanese What age range should you look for when buying a Havanese? The answer is that it depends. The age you select is dependent upon your motivations for buying a Havanese, the amount of care you can provide your Havanese, and the expectations you have for your Havanese. A quality breeder will only let you take home a Havanese that is at least eight weeks old. This age is necessary because a Havanese that is younger than eight weeks old still needs to develop both physically and mentally. For example, the largest puppy in the litter might end up being the smallest adult. One should not base their preferences solely on the status of the puppy before eight weeks of age as puppies can change considerably. It is a good idea to purchase a Havanese that is at around eight weeks of age for several reasons including: • physical and mental traits have matured to a level which identifies how your Havanese will act as an adult dog • determination of show dog potential is conducted • puppies are stronger and less susceptible to injury • initial health inoculations (vaccinations) have been administered • the presence of internal and external parasites has been ruled out by this time • the Havanese will be ready to enjoy a healthy, happy life with you in your family What about an adult Havanese? An older Havanese can evoke the same loyalty and love as a younger Havanese. An older Havanese may need a longer period of time to adjust to you and your home. Many times an older Havanese will be so happy to be part of your family that they will protect you with even more fervor than a younger Havanese. Why would older Havanese dogs be available for purchase? There are many reasons that an older Havanese becomes available. The Havanese may have been a stray that was rescued or one that decided dog show life was not for him. Note of caution: Make sure that no matter the age of Havanese you purchase that you have plenty of time to be home with your new dog in the beginning. A Havanese is a “lap dog” and craves constant human contact. Try not to leave your Havanese dog home alone for extended periods of time. This is especially important in the beginning because your dog needs to acclimate to his new surroundings. There are advantages and disadvantages to both young and mature dogs. Maybe you are looking for a Havanese that is obedient and house trained. A mature Havanese would be your best bet. Or you desire a loveable puppy. Either way you will find a Havanese that will have your whole family smiling.
