Most Havanese owners will tell you that the most frustrating part of the training process is housebreaking your Havanese puppy or adult dog. These wonderful dogs are creatures of habit, and if they learn inappropriate toileting habits early, it may be difficult to retrain the dog to act appropriately. Havanese are happy dogs that are eager to please. In fact, their sole interest in life is making you happy and getting your approval. When they have toileting accidents, it’s not a result of the Havanese choosing to be disobedient, but is confused about the appropriate action to take. As a Havanese owner your job is to guide the dog into learning the correct procedure. Regardless of what you are trying to train the Havanese to do, the dog will respond consistency, patience and praise. Most training mistakes occur as a result of being inconsistent in training efforts. Training new puppies and adult dogs are two distinctly different processes. First we’ll discuss housetraining a puppy, then an adult Havanese. Get Your Havanese on a Schedule The secret to housetraining your Havanese is to get your dog on a schedule and understand his or her needs. Dogs are creatures of habit, they like to eat at certain time, and soon after that, they’ll need to urinate or defecate. It helps to understand a little about the biology of a Havanese. Puppies have small bladders and digestive systems. As they mature they are able to hold it longer, but at first, your Havanese puppy will need to go every two hours or so, at least until the puppy is 3 months or older. They also need to go after waking up (even if just from a nap), after a play time and an hour or so after eating or drinking. If you learn to plan you Havanese toileting needs around a fairly predictable schedule, you can avoid many of the accidents that you would normally see. As the Havanese ages, he or she will be ale to last for longer periods of time. One recommendation is to expect a dog that is 3 months or older to be able to wait for toileting needs approximately one hour for each month, so a 4 month-old-puppy should be able to wait 4 hours.
