It can be a really exciting time when you have decided to become a dog owner. However that is the easy part. One of the most important things you will need to decide is what is the best breed of dog that will suit you and your lifestyle? We have all seen those cute little puppies in the window at the local puppy store, or perhaps we know somebody that owns a particular type of breed that you think looks really cute. And lately we have seen a lot of celebrities flaunting their little dogs, and because of this exposure it has made a lot of people choose these dogs because they also think they're cute.
However, the appearance of a particular dog breed is only a small part of the reason why you should choose a particular dog to bring into your home. Every breed of dog has their own particular characteristics, temperament, activity requirements and personality. The key is to choose a breed of dog that will best fit into your personal lifestyle. There is no point choosing a breed because you love the look of the dog, only to find out that your lifestyle does not permit the time it takes to meet the energy and activity requirements of that particular dog. One good example of this is the Siberian husky. The husky is a great looking dog that looks strong and has a cute wolflike appearance. But you will need to be prepared for the high activity levels that this breed of dog requires. If you're the sort of person who is committed to giving such a dog regular activities, then this breed of dog may be a good choice. If however, you are living a very busy lifestyle with family and or demanding work commitments, then the husky would not be the ideal choice.
Of course the same could be said of the other extreme. If you are a very physically active person who loves to be outside, at the park, at the beach and so on then choosing a small lap dog would not be the ideal choice for you.
The secret to choosing a pet for your home and lifestyle is to first decide whether you want a high energy highly active dog, or whether you would prefer a smaller breed. Once you have decided your next best bet is to begin studying the various breeds that meet your particular requirement. You may have a friend or a family member is that owns the sort of dog that you would be happy with. But before you go ahead and buy one, do your research first so you will know what to expect.
One of the biggest reasons why there are a lot of abandoned dogs, is because owners chose the dog without understanding enough about the breed.
Every breed will have its own set of characteristics and idiosyncrasies that you should be aware of before you bring one home. As an example, the Siberian husky has a unique tendency to escape. So this is an important piece of information that you'd need to know and be prepared for before bringing this sort of dog into your home. So then you can take the necessary precautions and preparations before bringing home your new friend.
Once you have decided on the breed of dog that you want, you will need to expect to commit a lot of time toward properly socializing and training your dog. Remember, the perfect dog for you is a combination of choosing the right breed as well as having a very well trained and obedient friend.
