How to Choose the Right Havanese Puppy

            So you’ve decided to get a purebred Havanese puppy from a breeder.  You go to see the dogs for the first time, and you look down at four or five of the cutest little creatures you’ve ever seen.  How in the world are you going to decide which one to take home and which ones to leave behind?  It will be a very tough decision, and you will surely finding yourself wishing you could just keep them all.  Here is some help, though, to help you figure out which one of the little guys is the very best one for you.

            To help you make your choice, the best tool you have is your eyes.  Observe the puppies.  Watch them for as long as their owner will allow you.  Get to know each of the dogs as best you can.  Watch how they behave alone and with the group.  You can learn a lot by watching.

            Realize that while you’re putting a lot of thought into this decision, the breeder has done the same thing.  He knows which ones are going to get chosen, and he will have them priced accordingly.  Don’t be surprised if there is quite a difference in the price from one dog to the next in the same litter.  The rules of supply and demand dictate how much the breeder is going to want to charge you for each dog.

            It is important to keep in mind the purpose for which you are buying a Havanese.  If you want a show dog or a dog to breed, you are going to be looking for a whole different set of characteristics than if you just want a great friend and loveable pet.

            If you want a show dog or breeder, you’re going to want to find the pick of the litter, by conventional standards.  Look for the healthiest, stockiest dog in the bunch.  This dog can sometimes be referred to as the alpha male, in the case of male dogs.  He will have the shiniest coat and often behave as if he is in control.  He is the one you want if you are going to win competitions and stud him out.

            If you want a female to breed, the same rules apply.  Look for a shiny, solid-colored coat and an overall larger body size.  This will be the dog that will turn out to have the best puppies that will bring the highest prices.

            If you are not looking for a show dog and just want a great little pet, then your decision is much easier.  There are far fewer rules for picking a good pet.  Just play with the dogs, and choose the one you have the most fun with.  It’s that simple!

            No matter what you choose, you know you are going to get a wonderful new Havanese pet that will love you as much as you will love him or her.  That being said, remember that the first choice that starts the whole process is deciding if you want a male or female Havanese puppy.
