Male of Female Havanese Puppy?
When you call up a Havanese breeder and tell him you want a brand new purebred Havanese puppy, the very first question he’s likely to ask you is “Male of female.” Here are some things to think about so you’ll have an answer ready. First of all: who will the dog be for? If it is for a child, they may already have their heart set on a certain gender of dog. A young boy may want a male dog that will wrestle and run around with him, or a little girl may want a female dog that she can baby and pamper. Ask the person you are buying the dog for, and then decide if you want to weigh their opinion against your other deciding factors.
Chief among these must be the fact that male and female Havanese puppies may have very different behavior patterns in some cases. As with most animals, the male can be at times aggressive or rough. Because your dog is a Havanese though, this situation will not be as extreme as it could be with other breeds of dog. Still, think about the temperament that you would like to see in your new puppy.
Behavioral differences may not be your biggest concern though. You can probably deal with the issues that their gender will raise regarding their behavior. Monetary concerns may weigh more heavily on your mind as you make this decision. Pertaining to the initial cost, females will cost on average a couple hundred dollars more than a similar male. If you are really seeking a bargain, you may have to take a male to get the best deal you can afford. But if you do choose to get a female, keep in mind what that extra cost counts towards – you can breed the female and actually make money.
Females will mature to breeding age and then can have a litter of several puppies that you could keep or sell. If you are planning for this, you will have to keep a close eye on her if you do not want puppies of a mixed breed. Watch out for the neighbor’s dogs coming around and things of that nature.
If you choose a male Havanese puppy, then you can wait for him to mature and actually get stud fees from owners of female Havanese. Average stud fees are a couple hundred dollars. You could buy your Havanese dog a lot of doggy treats with that money!
Of course, you could always choose to spay or neuter your Havanese dog, no matter which gender you will have. Again, money can be a factor here. The cost of spaying a female can be several times that of neutering a male, though both are relatively small costs.
In the end, you may not even care. You may already have picked out some Havanese puppy names and just want a dog that matches the name. You may pick out a certain puppy from the litter and want it, no matter its gender. But if you do decide to put some thought into this question, keep these tips in mind as you ponder.
