Preparing for Your Havanese Puppy
Buying or adopting a new Havanese puppy is a momentous occasion. You are not simply “getting a dog.” You are bringing in a new member of your family. You are taking on responsibility for the well-being and happiness of a wonderful creature. As such, you must treat the occasion with the necessary reverence. You cannot walk into this blindly. It is a major decision, and you must be sure before you do it. Also, there are many preparations you must make before you are ready for your new Havanese pup.
Consider the area into which you will be bringing your Havanese. You are going to have to go over every bit of the space in your home and make sure that it is optimized for keeping your small Havanese puppy safe and happy. First, it is extremely highly recommended that you do not even consider keeping your puppy outdoors. Being of the “toy” size, Havanese are exclusively indoor dogs. They are far too small and defenseless to remain outside. Also, they will require too much love attention to be left out in the cold. You and your puppy need plenty of together time, so he needs to be kept in your house with you.
In the next article you will learn how to create a special spot in your home just for your puppy. However, you must realize that no matter how you try, you will not be able to keep him in only his area. He will roam around and check out the rest of your place. So you must make sure that any accessible areas are safe. This will likely require blocking off areas such as the bathroom, the fireplace and maybe the stairs. Accidents happen, and it’s much better to be safe than sorry. You can use the same gates that keep toddlers out of these places to keep your Havanese puppy out. These gates are relatively inexpensive and easy to find.
Realize that when you bring your new Havanese pup home for the first time, the setting will be new and strange to him. His behavior may not be perfect at first. There may be a bit of damage done, and possibly some bathroom accidents. For these reasons, you will want to take some common sense steps to prepare. If you have important items or papers, do not leave them lying around. Perhaps as your pup matures, he will become completely trustworthy around such things, but for now, caution is the word.
For the most part, you will find your Havanese puppy to be a little bundle of joy that you will bring you much more joy than hardship. Still yet, it is always best to be prepared as well as possible. Keep him out of harm’s way, and keep fragile and important things out of his way. This will ensure that all goes well as you begin to share your home with your new Havanese dog.
