How To Choose A Vet To Care For Your Havanese

Choosing the right veterinarian for you and your dog is a lot like choosing a pediatrician for a child: it pays to be selective. It also pays to ask a lot of questions. Luckily for you, this article will detail some important factors to consider in the selection process and will provide you with some important questions to ask a prospective vet. Remember: the person you choose will be providing important medical care to your pet, so the more you can determine about his or her experience, knowledge and skills, the better. This will lead to better care for your Havanese.

    First Of All, The Don’ts

Don’t choose a vet based on their looks; their friendly demeanor (this is always a plus but shouldn’t swing the vote); the friendliness of their staff towards your dog (again, a plus but not a deciding factor; besides, they should like dogs, they work in a vet’s office!); their low rates (you wouldn’t go with the lowest priced pediatrician solely on this basis would you?); or because they happen to be the closest veterinarian based on where you live. While these factors are good to know, they are far from the most important.

87% of all dogs DIE way too early because of the food they are fed. Find out how to STOP this happening to your Havanese!

    A Veterinarian And A Philosopher

A veterinarian should be able to convey to you what their underlying beliefs are when it comes to treating animals. Most vets fall into one of two categories: allopathic or holistic. Stay with me here. Generally speaking, allopathic veterinarians practice much in the same way that most Western physicians do. Think conventional medicine. If your Havanese needs care, they examine the animal and interview you in order to gather a full list of symptoms in order to come to a diagnosis of the medical problem. Then they treat the problem, often with medication. However, some allopathic vets can become so focused on treating symptoms with medication that they fail to effectively treat the condition underlying the symptoms. When it comes to Havanese care or care for dogs in general, allopathic vets represent by far the majority of vets in the country.

Holistic veterinary medicine is the newcomer. Instead of treating symtoms, the aim of holistic medicine is to build up your pet’s natural defenses to disease in order to prevent disease. As you can see, this is a different approach from conventional medicine. Holistic vets view the animal from a wider perspective and utilize treatments in addition to medication management.

Which approach makes the most sense to you? Whichever one you choose, there are some common questions you can ask of either that will improve your chances of receiving quality care for your Havanese.

    Questions, Questions…

Here are some good ones to ask:

Can I tour the facility? It should be clean and comfortable, with a professional atmosphere. Make an unscheduled visit.

Do you have other Havanese as patients? This means that the veterinarian will be more knowledgeable about Havanese care based on previous experience.

Are you available to handle emergencies? They should say yes. Things happen, and emergencies can and will arise. Your veterinarian should be available to you 24-7.

Some additional tips: Talk to the vet directly, not just to office staff, and don’t be afraid to be aggressive in requiring answers. In the end, when you’ve gotten all your questions, answered, also trust your “gut instinct”. Will this person provide my Havanese quality care and the best possible Emergency Care for your Havanese?
