Caring For Your Havanese As He Ages

It happens to the best of us: we get old. Well, it happens to your dog too, just seven times faster. A dozen years go by and maybe your Havanese isn’t as spry as he used to be. Below are some ways to care for your Havanese as he ages.

    Keep Him Active

Although he may have lost a step or two, this doesn’t mean that your Havanese doesn’t need and still enjoy regular exercises. Let him set the pace and the distance. Regular walks and play time remain important. Regular exercise can improve circulation and digestion and can even alleviate age-related arthritis. So play and provide your Havanese with the care—and attention—he needs.

    Beware The Buddha Belly!

87% of all dogs DIE way too early because of the food they are fed. Find out how to STOP this happening to your Havanese!

In other words, care for your Havanese by not letting him get overweight as he ages. Regular exercise is important here too but so is the right diet. Try not to feed him from the table and avoid giving him foods high in fat. If he’s already packed on too many pounds, slowly decrease the amount of food you give him to about 75% of his original intake and give him smaller portions of food throughout the day. Also, older dogs usually require additional protein because they tend to metabolize protein less efficiently.

Maintain Continuity Of Routine And Environment

Try to avoid big changes in your older dog’s routine as this can add undue stress to him. Remember: he has gotten used to his routine and may resent sudden changes. His ability to accommodate change decreases as he gets older.

If his bed has always been in the living room or at the foot of your bed, keep it there. Avoid rearranging furniture, particularly if your Havanese has developed poor eyesight over the years. Keep him out of drafts and avoid extremes of hot or cold. Like older people, older dogs are less able to adjust to temperature changes. Caring for older Havanese may take more effort but he’s worth it and you know he would do the same for you.

    Get His Oil Checked Regularly

Continue regular vet checks as your dog ages. Your veterinarian can be a valuable source of information about aging dogs. Make sure you continue to groom him in order to keep him comfortable and be sure to give him plenty of cuddle time; he needs to be reassured he’s still loved and is still your “puppy”.
