Emergency Care For Your Havanese
No pet owner wants to think about having to seek—or administer—emergency care to their animal. But avoiding the topic won’t eliminate the possibility that something might happen to your Havanese that will require emergency care. It’s best to think ahead and be prepared so that you can respond effectively in a health emergency and so that your Havanese will receive prompt care. Here’s how you go about it.
What’s The Big Deal?
First of all, determine if what has happened constitutes an emergency. If Lucky (or whatever your dog’s name is) won’t eat the steak you cooked him even though you cut it into diagonal pieces just like he likes it, this is probably not an emergency. It may indicate that you have a little too much time on your hands if you’re doing this, but does not mean an emergency for your dog. Seriously though, if you observe any of the following signs or symptoms, it’s probably prudent to call your veterinarian immediately (keep the number handy) while trying to keep your pet as comfortable as possible until it receives medical attention.
If your dog is bleeding and it won’t stop even after you’ve applied direct pressure to the site with a clean dry bandage. This is particularly important in Havanese care due to their small size; they can’t afford to lose a lot of blood.
If your Havanese seems to have difficulty breathing.
If evidence suggests that your Havanese may have ingested something poisonous. Don’t induce vomiting. It could do more damage coming up than it did going down.
If your pet has episodes of bloody stools and/or vomiting.
If your pet suddenly collapses or seems bewildered.
Although these seem self-explanatory, you also need to call your vet immediately if your Havanese suffers a major physical trauma (for example, if they are hit by vehicle) or has a penetrating wound of any kind. If your pet is giving birth and having difficulty, a vet call would also be appropriate. An appropriate response on your part means quality Havanese care quickly, which can sometimes spell the difference between life and death for your pet.
An Ounce Of Prevention…
Is worth a pound of cure as the saying goes. Some emergency situations can be avoided by monitoring your dog’s environment and removing potential hazards. Don’t leave household chemicals out and within reach of your Havanese. Always walk your dog on a leash and if your Havanese is fenced outdoors at different times of the day, inspect the fence to make sure there are no convenient “Havanese sized” escape routes. Simple steps like these may prevent a harried call to your vet in the future. So, if you can provide good care for your Havanese, he will grow to be a ripe old age. Which brings us to consider Caring for your Havanese as He Ages.
