How To Care For Your Havanese At Home
When all the members of your family are getting their needs met on a regular basis, happiness results (well, most of the time anyway, until somebody gets upset). Your dog is a family member and you care about your Havanese enough to want to see him happy. Below are some ways to convey to your Havanese that you care.
Roughhouse But Not Too Rough
Although a Havanese is a sturdy little toy and likes to play regularly, he can be hurt unintentionally. This is particularly true in a home with children. Don’t leave your dog and your children together unsupervised. A young child can be rougher than he realizes which may result in an injury to your pet. Also, your pet may become fearful or avoidant. Demonstrate proper Havanese care to your children by showing them how their pet should be treated.
Don’t Yell
Pets (particularly puppies) can do things that test your patience. Try to avoid yelling at your Havanese. You can convey disapproval by your tone without the volume. Havanese are very sensitive and may become upset and withdrawn if you yell. Obedience from your pet—not fear—should be the desired result of correction.
Make Sure To Interact
Remember: your Havanese is highly sociable and needs regular attention from you. You are his master and he will prove a loyal and affectionate pet. He likes to cuddle in order to show you how much he loves you, so reserve time with him, even if you’ve had a rushed day. He can help ease your mind while you’re providing him with the care a Havanese needs.
Safety First!
Demonstrate Havanese care by maintaining a safe environment for your pet. Keep harmful objects or substances out of reach of his exploring, and be sure to always keep him on a leash when outside. Nobody’s idea of fun is spending a Friday night at the vet’s office with a sick or injured pet.
Stop Barking!
Not you, the dog. Havanese can be quick to bark at a strange noise or sight in order to alert you. To an extent, this is a good thing. But incessant barking can be a problem, so you may need to invest some time into training your Havanese. Your job is to verbally correct your dog to not bark at every tiny sound. This makes for a quieter home, and if you live in an apartment, your neighbors will thank you too!
