----------------------------------------- News Alert! Havanese Lovers Take Note! You Could Be Making The Same Mistakes With Your Havanese That Has Devastated So Many Others. Find Out All The Things You Probably Weren't Told About The Havanese By Reading The Havanese Manual... -----------------------------------------
How To Find A Quality Havanese Breeder?
You have some idea about what a reputable Havanese breeder should offer prospective buyers; now, how do you find one? One very good source of information is—you guessed it—the Internet. The websites for the two largest kennel clubs in America (the AKC and the UKC) are excellent places to start. In addition, some Havanese breeders have their own websites. To find out if a good Havanese breeder is nearby, check with local veterinarians or members of different kennel clubs in your community. Word of mouth is a powerful medium. Pet store owners and groomers may also be able to steer you in the direction of a reputable Havanese breeder.
Decisions, Decisions…
But wait! In all our talk about the Havanese and how to go about buying one, we’ve focused primarily on puppies; but that doesn’t mean puppies are the only possibility. Adult dogs can also make excellent pets and should be given consideration. Purebred adult dogs (including the occasional Havanese) can be located by contacting animal rescue programs in your area. Again, tap into the network of local veterinarians, kennel club members, groomers and pet store owners to get the local scoop. Check out our article on Havanese rescue/adoption for more information. Adult dogs are also offered for sale by reputable breeders who also sell puppies. There are pros and cons to consider when buying an adult dog, and these are also summarized for you in our article on Havanese rescue.
Once you decide on a puppy or adult dog, you need to think about where to purchase your pet. There are three general options to choose from: a pet store (usually offering puppies); a private “backyard” breeder; or a private “hobby” breeder. Let’s examine each option.
How Much Is That Doggie In The Window?
Pet stores are one way to Havanese ownership. However, given the relative rarity of the breed at the present time, your local pet store—whether a mom and pop operation or part of a larger chain—may not offer Havanese puppies for sale. Another fact to keep in mind: many large pet store chains purchase their animals from breeders who are more motivated by profit than the health of their animals. These animals can be more prone to health problems (large scale breeders often are not conscientious when it comes to health testing) and socialization issues, since they are often kept in small cages and receive little interaction with humans. Some responsible pet owners advise people looking to purchase a dog to avoid large pet stores altogether. Lastly, the price you pay for your pet at a pet store may be more than what you would pay a private breeder because one of the store’s motives—like any business—is profit.
“Rare, Full-Blooded Puppies For Sale, With Papers!”
Sound familiar? Some so-called “backyard breeders” may advertise puppies for sale using vague terms designed to impress potential pet owners. Be cautious when exploring ads like these. Backyard Havanese breeders, like some pet stores but on a smaller, breed specific scale, look at breeding their animals as a way to quick profits. Consequently, the animals they produce may be prone to health problems due to inbreeding or improper care. This is not to say that there are not some reputable backyard breeders; it just pays to be careful.
An additional warning sign: if they readily have available a large number of cheaply priced puppies of a rare breed such as the Havanese, the questions you should ask are How? and Why? Reputable Havanese breeders who truly care about the health of their dogs rarely choose to reproduce them every chance they get, so puppies are not always available. Some may even have waiting lists for their animals.
Not Quantity But Quality
Your third choice in obtaining a Havanese for your family is the Havanese “hobby” breeder. These breeders tend to be the most reputable, and their price per animal usually tends to be cheaper than the mark-up price you would pay at a pet store for a (possibly less fit) dog. In short, they truly care about the breed and its betterment, and their primary motivation is not profit. It may take a bit more work to find one these reputable Havanese breeders since they don’t aggressively advertise their animals; again, local veterinarians and other pet care providers may provide good leads for you. And don’t forget about the World Wide Web! Next up: How to choose the right Havanese breeder.
