The Only Stupid Question Is The One You Never Ask…

Well, maybe that’s not entirely true. Asking a Havanese breeder if the dog can be taught to juggle watermelons is probably a stupid question. No, in fact, it is a stupid question. But, there are a lot of good questions you can ask that will help you determine if the breeder is deserving of their good reputation. Here are some biggie questions to remember going in:

Do you health test your dogs? A quality breeder’s answer will be yes. At a minimum, the breeder should have paperwork documenting that the parents (that’s the dam and the sire in dog breeder speak) have had their eyes and hips checked for possible problems. A reputable Havanese breeder should also be able to provide you with details about any genetic problems common to the breed.

Can I see the dam and the sire? Again, the answer should be yes. While it’s not an absolute predictor of the temperament of your puppy as an adult, it’s a good indicator.

How much do puppies cost? This one probably seems obvious, but the breeder’s asking price may give you some idea of how reputable he or she is. By the way, the asking price for a Havanese puppy is $1000 or more. If a breeder is offering a Havanese puppy for substantially less, that may be a sign that they are motivated by quick profit than the health of the dogs.

Does you offer a health guarantee? Yes should be the answer yet again. A health guarantee should be in writing and is the breeder’s promise to make right any problems that occur with the health of the puppy. This means that the breeder will agree to help defray the cost to address any health problems that may arise in the dog. It may also provide the buyer with a full refund or a replacement dog in the event that the puppy dies or must be euthanized.

Can you provide me with some references? If you’re dealing with a reputable Havanese breeder he or she should not hesitate to provide you with the names and contact information of other satisfied buyers. Lastly, a quality Havanese breeder should ask you some questions as well to determine that the puppy will be going to a safe and loving home.
