Havanese Breeders
Most Havanese breeders are devoted to maintaining the purity and health of the breed, and are conscientious in their breeding efforts. But the Havanese, like all breeds today, can fall prey to “puppy milling”—breeders who chiefly care about producing large numbers of puppies for profit, with little or no regard for the overall health of the animals. In order to get what you want—a healthy, purebred Havanese puppy from an established line—it pays to do a little research in finding a reputable Havanese breeder.
Puppies For Sale!
When looking for a reputable breeder, a potential Havanese owner is faced with a fact that makes for a challenging search: the Havanese, while no longer in danger of extinction, are still somewhat rare. You’re unlikely to find ads in your local paper for Havanese puppies and there are not breeders in every state. What’s more, there is a higher demand for this dog than the current supply, which means, in some cases, once you find a reputable breeder it make take a year or two before you are able to purchase a puppy. So, you may have to wait—and travel—in order to purchase a Havanese.
Despite the time and distance that might be involved in obtaining a quality Havanese puppy, it’s worth the wait for several reasons. First, from the owner’s side, it’s important not to rush into the purchase of any pet, particularly a long-lived dog like a Havanese, since this dog will be your loyal companion, friend and family member for more than a decade. If you don’t take the time to locate a reputable Havanese breeder who cares about the breed but instead choose to purchase the first puppy available, you may risk being the long-term owner of an inferior animal who does not look or behave like the dog we’ve described.
Another reason to search for a quality Havanese breeder: they perform health testing that “puppy mill” breeders do not. Having health testing done by the breeder and provided to you with the purchase of your puppy gives you valuable information about the overall health of your dog. And while it cannot totally rule out the possibility of your pet developing chronic health problems, health testing provides a guarantee by the breeder to make things right, even if that means taking the dog back and providing you with a refund. This leads us to the next question: how to go about finding a quality Havanese breeder.
