Grooming Your Havanese

It is grooming that makes a difference to the “look and feel” of a Havanese. They too need care—bathing, brushing, grooming, and more. By nature, the Havanese are clean animals and will groom themselves. They have no odor unless they encounter a skunk or pile of putrefying material. They should be bathed once a month. However, any poop or debris that clings to their backsides must be cleaned regularly. Experts recommend that since the dogs are small as well as delicate you must take care, that they do not slip and injure themselves during a bath. So, use a small tub with a no slip mat placed in it. Useful Grooming tips: • Shampoo the Havanese using “Brightening Shampoo” for the first time – the proportion to use is 1 part shampoo to 10 parts of water. Use a shampoo recommended by the vet. The ph should be ideal for Havanese otherwise they develop skin problems. Always rinse well. In case the coat is dry or damaged, then please do use Reconstructing Shampoo—1 part of shampoo to 15 parts water. Ensure that all the shampoo is rinsed away. • A conditioner may be used for areas around the ear, legs, and body furnishings – use a moisturizer conditioner for a Havanese with a regular coat—1 part to 15 parts water is the ideal dilution. If you need a soft coat use a “Deep Conditioner” and then rinse lightly. • If the coat becomes very rough, many experts recommend that you oil the dog. The mixture should contain: Cream conditioner1/3 cup, oil 2/3 cups, warm water 4 cups – all to be mixed well in a blender. Work the mixture well into the coat until saturated. Do not rinse the mixture out. • For spot cleaning, use Ultra No Rinse Shampoo—spray lightly and then work in with fingers. Towel dry and then use a blow dryer. In case deeply soiled, rinse the area out with water or a spray bottle.
