Breeding Your Havanese

Whether or not to breed your Havanese needs careful consideration. Breeding needs more than love it needs understanding, knowledge, money, experience, insights, and where a “toy breed” like the Havanese is concerned lots of expertise. You should not think of breeding a Havanese because the dog is cute and you would love another just like it --- first and foremost there are no guarantees that the pups will physically or behavior wise resemble their mother/father. Please don’t even feel that I will keep one pup and sell the rest of the litter to make some money—it hardly ever works like that, please consider the costs you will incur first: mating fees, vet fees, whelping costs, food, medical care, health checks, and much more. And, often all the people who said, “Count me in when the Havanese has pups,” will make innumerable excuses and disappear when the pups are actually available. And “god forbid” sometimes pups develop diseases that need expensive treatment or the bitch develops problems during whelping. Breeding means not just time but considerable expenses. Further, being registered is no qualification for breeding—will your dog make a “difference” to the breed is what you have to think about/answer. • Only consider breeding if your Havanese is very special. • Never breed until the Havanese is two years old—only then will any health related or behavioral problems surface. • Take the advice of your vet/trainer – they are the best persons to tell you honestly whether your Havanese should be bred for the right reasons. • Have all blood checks and other screenings done before making a decision. • The “mate” should also have all tests done, he /she should compliment your Havanese is every way, and the match should be such that the litter is “excellent” in every way. Read about the pros and cons of breeding and find out all you can of the risks involved. Talk to experienced breeders as well as the breeder you got your Havanese from. Most of them will be open about aspects of breeding and will be more than willing to give you a clear picture.
