You have cleared a living area for your new puppy and made sure that it was free from dangers. The next item on your preparation list involves filling this living area with basic puppy supplies. Following is a list of basic puppy supplies that you should purchase and have ready before your puppy comes home for the first time. • Dog bowls for food and water. Stainless steel is recommended as it is sturdy and easy to clean. • Dog collar. Find a collar that has an adjustable clamp. There is a bevy of styles and colors to choose from. Purchasing a color can be fun as you find one that will set your pooch apart from the pack. • Dog leash. There are many types of dog leashes available on the market today. You can purchase a traditional leash that hooks to the dog collar. Or you can find a leash that comes in harness form. The harness dog collar is especially useful if your dog tends to run in front of you. The harness will prevent the collar from placing a choking strain on their throat. The length of the leash is up to you. Quality of your leash is an important consideration. A leather leash is always a good option. However, you can find sturdy leashes in every color and pattern imaginable. For example, you can find dog collars and leashes that have the mascot of your favorite football team on them. • Identification Tag. Find a durable I.D. tag to place securely on your dog’s collar. The I.D. tag should contain your dog’s name and your telephone number in the event they are lost. Some states require vaccination certifications and registration tags that must be attached to your dog’s collar. • Dog bed and/or Dog Kennel. As mentioned before your dog requires a quiet sleeping area they can call their own. You want to make their sleeping quarters comfortable. A great way to make your dog love their sleeping area is to place a dog bed in it. Find a dog bed that is easily washable and large enough that your dog can still fit in it when they become an adult dog. Avoid wicker and plastic dog beds as they can be chewed and easily harbor fleas and other unwanted parasites. Another sleeping option is to have a dog kennel. The beauty of a dog kennel, sometimes referred to as a dog crate, is that it helps your dog to feel secure. Wire cage crates are available, but a better looking crate is the plastic travel kennel. Find a kennel that provides ample room for your puppy to sleep and turn around in. You can also use this kennel when traveling. Many dogs like to sleep in their kennel on long car rides. • Grooming supplies are essential. You should brush your dog on a daily basis so that their hair doesn’t mat or become tangled. Keep your dog’s teeth clean by using a canine toothbrush and toothpaste. Consult your breeder, a veterinarian, or pet store clerk for recommendations. • Dog food. Dogs have been known to want to eat you out of house and home. It is crucial that you feed your dog only dog food and in the proper proportions. You don’t want your dog to become overweight as this can cause health problems. Plus, you want to provide them with proper nutrition so they can maintain their health. There are different opinions and perspectives as to the diet regime you should put your Havanese on. It is best to consult your breeder or veterinarian for further guidance. Don’t be alarmed if your Havanese doesn’t feel like eating the first meal you feed them when you bring them home. They may still be adjusting to their new environment. • Designate an area in your home that you are going to use for housetraining your puppy. This area must be secure.
